Gardening Jobs For March?

Here a few tips for March on the allotment:

🥦🥕🥔 Vegetables:

• Sow early cauliflower, broccoli, celery and broad beans under cover.

• Make up new horseradish and seakale beds, either with new plants, or divisions of old.

• Sow spinach, carrots and earliest potatoes in very sheltered position, or under cloches.

🍓🍎🍑Fruit:

• This is the last window for planting new strawberry beds.

• Peach, apricots or nectarines blossom can be destroyed by frosts, so cover briefly with fleece or similar when frost is forecast.

• Check ties on all newly planted fruit trees.

🍅Greenhouse:

• Carefully ventilate to avoid fungal problems./

• If you have a heated greenhouse or polytunnel, sow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons, and aubergines.

• Keep seedlings as close to the glass as possible to prevent legginess.

🌸 Flowers:

• Plant out autumn sown sweet peas directly in sheltered plots.

• Bring dahlias out of storage, pot up and move to greenhouse.

• Sow hardy annuals direct into prepared soil in sheltered plots – great for attracting pollinating insects
