A very fine bark is great to use as a dark mulch around small plants in beds and borders to enrich or insulate the soil.

Used as a soil conditioner and when incorporated into the soil, our composted bark fines add organic matter helping to increase the soil’s ability to hold on to moisture and retain nutrients, aiding root development. The overall effect is to create a better environment in which plants can grow.

Our bark fines have a pH of between 4.5 – 6.5 and a particle size of 0-8 mm. This is also often good for ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas and heathers as it lowers the pH value of the soil.

They are typically produced from mixed bark but spruce trees can often form the bulk.

Fines are different in colour depending on the time of year ,and contain small chips of wood which give it the white flecks. Our fines have a minimum white wood content giving you more bark for the buck!

All our fines are sourced from FSC companies (forestry stewardship council) allowing businesses and consumers to identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products made with materials from well-managed forests and/or recycled sources.
